Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Jane Austen
Directed by Derrick Ledbetter
Feb. 26-March 2
Mainstage Series
This ain’t your grandmother’s Austen! Bold, surprising, boisterous, and timely.
This Pride and Prejudice for a new era explores the absurdities and thrills of finding your perfect (or imperfect) match in life. The outspoken Lizzy Bennet is determined to never marry, despite mounting pressure from society. But can she resist love, especially when that vaguely handsome, mildly amusing and impossibly aggravating Mr. Darcy keeps popping up at every turn?! Literature’s greatest tale of latent love has never felt so theatrical, or so full of life than it does in this effervescent adaptation. Because what turns us into greater fools … than the high-stakes game of love?
Ghost Music
Written by Bo List
Directed by Abe Reybold
May 8-11
Mainstage Series
It’s been months since Dawn’s musician husband, Clark, passed away. But every now and then she still hears familiar music echoing through their empty old house. When one of Clark’s former students shows up unexpectedly seeking one last lesson, old wounds are reopened and voices from the past are reawakened. In the distant past and across the globe, renowned pianist Clara Schumann desperately tries to preserve the dignity of her husband, the brilliant composer Robert Schumann, as he descends into madness. Separated by a gulf of both time and space, Dawn, Robert and Clara grapple with grief and loss, and the hope that long-ago melodies can heal their broken hearts.
This production is sponsored in part by an AthensWest Emerging Play Grant awarded to the theater program and sabbaticals for both professors Greg Partain and Tosha Fowler. The production will feature a team of professional actors and a director working in residence at Transylvania with the live musical performance of Partain as an essential component of the play’s concept and design. Fowler will be helming one of the roles as well as head producer. Professors Daniel Bennett and Melissa Gilbert will lead the design team.
This is a bonus professional production of a world premiere, commissioned by Transylvania Theater and AthensWest Theatre Company.
