Eastern graduate Anna Balassa wins ALD Graduate Fellowship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Anna Balassa, a Transylvania University senior and graduate of Eastern High School, was awarded the $3,000 Adele Hagner Stamp Graduate Fellowship from Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Balassa, who is from Louisville, is an exercise science major and a member of the Transylvania swim team. She has been an August Term Scholar and this year was inducted into the Holleian Society, which recognizes students for superior achievement in liberal arts studies. She plans to use the award to work toward an advanced degree in occupational therapy.
Transylvania leads the nation in the number of ALD graduate fellowships. With 280 chapters nationwide, the honor society awards 24 of the competitive fellowships each year for students to pursue postgraduate studies. Transylvania students have earned three of those 24 fellowships each of the last three years.
“This is an incredibly competitive program,” said Transylvania professor Mike Nichols, who is the chapter adviser. “This is a testimony not only about the quality of our students, but also to the thoughtful letters of recommendation our faculty write.”
Boone County graduate Kaitlin Haggard wins ALD Graduate Fellowship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kaitlin Haggard, a Transylvania University senior and graduate of Boone County High School, was awarded the $3,000 Christine Conaway Graduate Fellowship from Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Haggard, who is from Florence, Ky., is a psychology major and director of T-Unity, Transylvania’s student equality group. This year she was inducted into the Holleian Society, which recognizes students for superior achievement in liberal arts studies. She is an affiliate member of the Kentucky Psychological Association and plans to use the award to study clinical psychology.
Transylvania leads the nation in the number of ALD graduate fellowships. Covington Latin graduate Malory Thelen wins ALD Graduate Fellowship

Barren County graduate Mattie Bruton wins Clark Writing Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Mattie Bruton, a Transylvania University junior and graduate of Barren County High School, received the 2015 Thomas D. Clark Writing Award for her paper, “Sallie Southall Cotten: Womanhood, Racial Purity, and Defining ‘Progress’ in the New South.”
Bruton, who is from Summer Shade, Ky., is a history major.
The Clark Award, sponsored by the Kentucky Association of Teachers of History, recognizes outstanding historical research and writing by an undergraduate at a Kentucky college or university.
Raquel Loftus wins Dean’s Purchase Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Raquel Loftus, an accounting major at Transylvania University from Danville, Ky., has won the school’s 2016 Dean’s Grand Purchase Award at the Juried Student Art Exhibition in Morlan Gallery.
Vice President and Dean of the University Laura Bryan selected her untitled ceramic vase to become part of Transylvania’s permanent art collection.
Students win Fulbright awards
Two Transylvania seniors—Samantha Easterling of Wilmore, Ky., and Courtney Smith of Batavia, Ohio—were selected for competitive Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants that fund English Teaching Assistantships abroad for the 2016-17 academic year. Henry Clay graduate Tiara Brown wins Judy Gaines Young Student Writing Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Tiara Brown, a Transylvania University senior and graduate of Henry Clay High School, won the 2016 Judy Gaines Young Student Writing Award.
The award goes to a student who demonstrates originality and achievement as a creative writer. Brown, who is from Lexington, has a double major in English and Spanish and a minor in writing, rhetoric, and communication. She was selected by Transylvania Writer in Residence Maurice Manning.
Brown’s poem, “A World Unnterrupted,” honors her friend and fellow Transy senior Katie Stewart, who passed away in a fall at Raven Run this spring. She will read the poem at Transylvania’s commencement May 28, where Stewart will be awarded her bachelor of arts degree posthumously.
In addition to poetry, Brown is focusing on writing screenplays.
Alexandria native Hannah Weber wins receives Yale Bioethics Summer Seminar Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Hannah Weber, a Transylvania University sophomore and graduate of Gatton Academy, received the university’s 2016 Yale Bioethics Summer Seminar Award. Transylvania will cover her costs for the seminar, which draws students and professors from around the world.
Weber, who is from Alexandria, Ky., is a neuroscience major and a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority.
The Yale seminar offers a two-month intensive program for students who are interested in the field of bioethics and special topics such as care for the dying, bioethics and law, bioethics and media, literature and public health. Weber will get the opportunity to research and present a paper on a selected topic at a mini-conference at the end of the program.
GRC graduate Megan Wasson wins ALD scholarship to study in Spain
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Megan Wasson, a Transylvania University sophomore and graduate of George Rogers Clark High School, has won a $1,000 James Stemler Study Abroad Scholarship from Alpha Lambda Delta honor society.
Wasson, who is from Winchester, Ky., is an exercise science and psychology double major. She plans to use the scholarship to study in Spain through the Kentucky Institute for International Studies.
Portsmouth West graduate Drew Cunningham wins Brandon Honor Scholarship to Vandy
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Drew Cunningham, a senior at Transylvania University and a graduate of Portsmouth West High School, has won a Brandon Honors Scholarship to Vanderbilt University Divinity School that will pay his full tuition to pursue a Master’s of Divinity degree.
Cunningham is graduating from Transylvania with a philosophy major.
Saint Patrick graduate Chanslor Galleinstein wins at regional singing audition
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Chanslor Galleinstein, a Transylvania University senior and graduate of Saint Patrick High School, took first place in the Senior Men category at the National Association of Teachers of Singing Student Auditions – Mid-South Region.
Gallenstein, who is from Maysville, Ky., is majoring in philosophy, politics, and economics with a minor in music. He has studied opera since his first year at Transylvania and made his operatic debut in 2015 in Prague as Il Commendatore in ”Don Giovanni” at the Estates Theatre as part of the Prague Summer Nights Young Artists Program.
Scott graduate Erin Romito earns All-HCAC volleyball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Erin Romito, a senior volleyball player and graduate of Scott High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University.
The outside hitter had an HCAC-best 481 kills, moving her into first place on Transylvania’s career kills list with 1,617. Her 4.96 kills per set also led the conference. She finished first place in the conference in points with 550.5 and points per set with 5.7.
Dixie Heights graduate Parker Stansberry earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Parker Stansberry, a senior basketball player and graduate of Dixie Heights High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University.
Stansberry averaged 15.8 points and 5.1 rebounds per game, and he led the HCAC in blocks at 1.5 a game. He became the 46th member of Transylvania’s 1,000 point club Dec. 15.
Mercer County graduate Tate Spivey earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Tate Spivey, a senior soccer player and graduate of Mercer County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University.
Spivey led a Pioneer defense that had the best goals against average in the HCAC with just 0.68 per game. He also scored a game winner against Bluffton Oct. 24.
Dunbar graduate Riley Calhoon earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Riley Calhoon, a sophomore soccer player and graduate of Paul Laurence Dunbar High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University.
Calhoon scored a team-high six goals and added five assists, including five of those goals in conference play.
Henry Clay graduate Claire Mielcarek earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Claire Mielcarek, a senior tennis player and graduate of Henry Clay High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University for the fourth straight year.
Mielcarek played #1 singles and #1 doubles, finishing 7-2 in both. She is just the second player in Transylvania women’s tennis history to earn four First Team All-Conference nods.
Taft graduate Shawn Kolani earns All-HCAC basketball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Shawn Kolani, a first-year point guard and graduate of Taft High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University.
Kolani averaged 11.4 points per game and was third in the HCAC in 3-point field goal percentage at 44.7 percent. She also finished second in the conference in assists per game with 4.9.
Male graduate Jessica Chandler earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jessica Chandler, a sophomore lacrosse player and graduate of Male High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University
Chandler started all 16 games for the Pioneers, finishing second on the team with six points and first with 28 shots on goal.
Forest graduate Megan Dixon earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Megan Dixon, a senior tennis player and graduate of Forest High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for Transylvania University for the third straight year.
Dixon played #2 singles and #1 doubles, finishing 7-1 and 7-2, respectively.
Woodford County graduate Lindsey Sizemore earns HCAC soccer honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Lindsey Sizemore, a sophomore soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of Woodford County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team.
Sizemore scored five goals and handed out three assists for the Pioneers.
Conner graduate Jared Williams earns All-HCAC baseball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jared Williams, a sophomore utility infielder and graduate of Conner High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Williams batted .311 with 41 hits, 27 RBI and five stolen bases while playing all over the infield and committing just four errors.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
LCA graduate Blake Young helps Transylvania to 12th place NCAA golf finish
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Blake Young, a first-year golfer and graduate of Lexington Christian Academy High School, helped guide Transylvania University to a 12th place finish at the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Mendon Golf Club in Penfield, N.Y., May 10-13.
Young finished in 51st place overall with at 24-over-par for the tournament.
Bourbon County graduate Zach Treilobs helps Transylvania to 12th place NCAA golf finish
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Zach Treilobs, a first-year golfer and graduate of Bourbon County High School, helped guide Transylvania University to a 12th place finish at the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Mendon Golf Club in Penfield, N.Y., May 10-13.
Treilobs finished in 72nd place overall with at 35-over-par for the tournament.
Moeller graduate Casey Gilligan helps Transylvania to 12th place NCAA golf finish
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Casey Gilligan, a senior golfer and graduate of Moeller High School, helped guide Transylvania University to a 12th place finish at the NCAA Division III Golf Championship at Mendon Golf Club in Penfield, N.Y., May 10-13.
Gilligan finished in 60th place overall with at 26-over-par for the tournament.
Ballard graduate Emma Oliver named ORLC Newcomer of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Emma Oliver, a first-year defender and graduate of Ballard High School, was named the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Newcomer of the Year for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Oliver started 16 games for the Pioneers, picking up a team-high 77 ground balls and finishing fourth in caused turnovers with 33 and fifth in draw controls with 58. Her 45 points, 33 goals and 12 assists rank 12th in the conference, and her 4.81 ground balls per match average ranked her 13th in the NCAA Division III.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
Ballard graduate Logan Fogle wins ORLC championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Logan Fogle, a first-year and graduate of Ballard High School, has won the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Fogle, a defender, started six games for the Pioneers and picked up 18 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.
Ballard graduate Rob Rhea earns All-ORLC lacrosse honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Rob Rhea, a junior and graduate of Ballard High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Second Team after winning a second consecutive ORLC championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers. The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Rhea, a defender for the Pioneers, caused a team-high 23 turnovers and picked up 39 ground balls, second on the club. He also scored a goal on the offensive side.
Ballard graduate Clark Watts earns All-ORLC lacrosse honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Clark Watts, a junior and graduate of Ballard High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Honorable Mention Team after winning a second consecutive ORLC championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Watts, a midfielder for the Pioneers, scored 20 goals and added four assists while finishing second on the team with 39 shots on goal. He also picked up 33 ground balls and caused seven turnovers.
Ballard graduate Cooper Fogle named ORLC Defensive Player of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Cooper Fogle, a junior goalkeeper and graduate of Ballard High School, was named Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Defensive Player of the Year as a member of the back-to-back champion Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
Fogle recorded 129 saves with a 54.7 percent save percentage while leading one of the top defenses in the nation. He allowed just 35 goals in all of conference play.

Batesville graduate Meg Liter wins earns All-HCAC softball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Meg Liter, a first-year third baseman and graduate of Batesville High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team from the HCAC champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.
The Pioneers (26-13, 14-2 HCAC) defeated Anderson University 9-5 in the final game of the season to wrap up a 14-2 conference slate and earn the regular season title in a year when the team was picked to finish second to last by a preseason coaches poll.
Liter, batted .342 with a homer and 21 RBIs in 38 games. She also pitched in 10 games, finishing with a 2.16 ERA in 22 2/3 innings.
Bishop Watterson graduate Collin Ruegg wins ORLC championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Collin Ruegg, a first-year player and graduate of Bishop Watterson High School, has won the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Ruegg appeared in 10 games for the Pioneers, scoring three goals on 10 shots and picking up eight ground balls.
Bridgton Academy graduate Alex Addison wins back-to-back ORLC championships
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Alex Addison, a sophomore goalkeeper and graduate of Bridgton Academy, has won a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Addison appeared in three games for the Pioneers, earning two saves.
Bullitt East graduate Jamie Lutes wins earns HCAC Pitcher of the Year Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jamie Lutes, a senior and graduate of Bullitt East High School, was named was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year as part of the HCAC champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.
Lutes was a perfect 9-0 with six complete games in conference with a 1.11 ERA, allowing just nine runs over the entire conference schedule. Overall this season she amassed a 13-3 record, with a 2.70 ERA and 45 strikeouts over 93 1/3 innings.

Roby appeared in all 16 games for the Pioneers, scoring 10 goals with four assists. He also picked up 12 ground balls and had 35 shots on goal.
Centennial graduate Sam Ives earns All-ORLC lacrosse honor
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Sam Ives, a senior and graduate of Centennial High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Second Team as a member of the ORLC champion Transylvania University Pioneers.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Ives picked up a team-high 57 ground balls and won 130 out of his 194 face-offs. He also scored seven goals with three assists.
Chaminade-Julienne graduate Julia Ward earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Julia Ward, a sophomore attacker and graduate of Chaminade-Julienne High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference First Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Ward started all 17 games for the Pioneers and led the team in points with 81 on 62 goals and 19 assists. She became the fastest player in program history to reach 100 career goals, and her 38 ground balls were third on the team.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
Christian Academy of Louisville graduate Jessica Powell earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jessica Powell, a first-year catcher and graduate of Christian Academy of Louisville, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team from the HCAC champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.

Powell played in 37 of the Pioneers’ 39 games, batting .344 with a home run and 15 RBI while handling a bulk of the catching duties. She was also second on the team with 10 doubles.

Mumford, who batted leadoff for the Pioneers, finished with a .389 batting average with five home runs and 20 RBI. She also finished second on the team with 13 stolen bases while striking out just nine times in 126 at bats.

Poehlein batted .364 with three home runs for the Pioneers and was third on the team with 25 RBI.

Willett, an infielder for the Pioneers, appeared in 10 games, mostly as a defensive replacement, and collected two RBI in six at-bats.

Stiles pitched a team-high 122 1/3 innings, finishing with a 2.69 ERA and 60 strikeouts. She amassed a 10-9 record with 14 complete games as well as two saves for the Pioneers. She also batted .270 with 13 RBI.

The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
East Jessamine graduate Nick McCarthy earns All-American honors at Transylvania
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Nick McCarthy, a senior golfer at Transylvania University and graduate of East Jessamine High School, has been named an NCAA Division III Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar and member of the GCAA Division III PING All-Region Team after a stellar season.
McCarthy was one of 34 Division III golfers to earn the honor, which requires participating in 50 percent of a team’s competitive rounds and possessing a stroke average under 79, along with a minimum grade-point average of 3.2. It’s the second consecutive year he has captured the award.
“Nick has done an outstanding job of balancing being an elite-level golfer and an outstanding student,” said coach Brian Lane. “He is very active on our campus in a number of different avenues and has represented Transylvania athletics superbly.”
McCarthy was second on the team with a 73.6 scoring average per round for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Pioneers, who won the title for the 10th straight year. He ended the season finishing tied for 36th in the NCAA Division III Men’s Championship, where the Pioneers finished tied for 12th as a team.
Fairview graduate Tayler Thompson wins HCAC softball championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Tayler Thompson, a first-year pitcher and graduate of Fairview High School, was part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.
The Pioneers (26-13, 14-2 HCAC) defeated Anderson University 9-5 in the final game of the season to wrap up a 14-2 conference slate and earn the regular season title in a year when the team was picked to finish second to last by a preseason coaches poll.
Thompson appeared in seven games in relief for the Pioneers and finished with a 1-0 record.
Grayslake North graduate Ryan Staley wins ORLC championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Ryan Staley, a first-year player and graduate of Grayslake North High School, has won the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Staley scored 10 goals and added three assists for the Pioneers on the season.
Henry Clay graduate Webb Vanmeter wins ORLC championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Webb Vanmeter, a first-year and graduate of Henry Clay High School, has won the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.

Vanmeter appeared in 15 games for the Pioneers, picking up 26 ground balls and causing eight turnovers.

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Krista DeBurger, a junior first baseman and graduate of Henry County High School, was named Most Valuable Player for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference as a member of the HCAC champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.
DeBurger batted .408 with 15 home runs and 44 RBI. In conference play, she led the HCAC with seven home runs, 21 RBI, 47 total bases, nine walks and a .569 on-base percentage.

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Tom Banahan, a junior and graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Banahan finished with a 6-1 record and struck out 43 batters over just 38 2/3 innings, mostly in relief appearances. His 10.01 K/9 was good for second in the conference.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
Lexington Catholic graduate Brock Slater wins back-to-back ORLC championships
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Brock Slater, a sophomore defender and graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, has won a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Slater picked up 15 ground balls and caused 10 turnovers for the Pioneers while starting 14 games for one of the nation’s top defenses.
Lexington Catholic graduate Josh Mesmer earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Josh Mesmer, a sophomore attacker and graduate of Lexington Catholic High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Honorable Mention Team after winning a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Mesmer scored 17 goals on a 32.1 percent shot percentage for the Pioneers. He added four assists and picked up 13 ground balls.

Meyer scored 12 goals on just 28 shots for the Pioneers, adding two assists and picking up 15 ground balls.
Lincoln-Way Central graduate Brendan Thompson wins back-to-back ORLC championships
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Brendan Thompson, a sophomore and graduate of Lincoln-Way Central High School, has won a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Thompson scored six goals and added three assists for the Pioneers. He also picked up 13 ground balls.
Loveland graduate Ashley Frees wins HCAC softball championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Ashley Frees, a senior outfielder and graduate of Loveland High School, was part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.

Frees appeared in 23 games for the Pioneers, batting .500 with four stolen bases.
Male graduate Trey Simpson named HCAC baseball MVP
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Trey Simpson, a senior and graduate of Male High School, was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Most Valuable Player after leading the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Simpson, an outfielder and starting pitcher, led the HCAC with a .383 batting average and finished second in the conference with 22 stolen bases without being caught once, ending his career never having been caught stealing.
He added a team-high five home runs along with 24 RBI.
From the mound, he amassed a 4-2 record in 11 starts, striking out a team-high 50 batters.
“Trey led us in the field, at the plate and on the mound this season,” Coach Chris Campbell said. “I have been increasingly impressed with his attitude and work ethic, and it has been a privilege to see him grow as a player and a person over his career.”
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
Muhlenberg County graduate Jenna Soderling named HCAC Freshman Golfer of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jenna Soderling, a first-year golfer at Transylvania University and graduate of Muhlenberg County High School, was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman Golfer of the Year.
Soderling led all freshmen in scoring at the HCAC Championship with back-to-back scores of 88.
Northern graduate Brandon Heller wins back-to-back ORLC championships
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Brandon Heller, a sophomore and graduate of Northern High School, has won a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.

Heller appeared in 13 games for the Pioneers, scoring one goal and adding one assist. He also picked up eight ground balls on the season.

Notre Dame graduate Julia Johnson wins OAC Championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Julia Johnson, a junior swimmer at Transylvania University and graduate of Notre Dame Academy, won the Ohio Athletic Conference Championship in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:06.93.
She also finished second in the 100-yard butterfly.
Notre Dame graduate Savannah Hemmer earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Savannah Hemmer, a sophomore runner and graduate of Notre Dame Academy, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Hemmer was part of the conference outdoor champion 4x100m relay and indoor champion 4x200m teams, and she finished 10th at the HCAC Championships in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.37.
Oak Ridge graduate sweeps HCAC Track Athlete of the Year Awards
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University junior and Oak Ridge High School graduate Cole Green has cemented himself as one of the greatest track athletes in the history of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this year, winning both the HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Awards.
Green won conference championships in two indoor events (60 meter, and 200 meter) and two outdoor events (100 meter, 200 meter).
Owen County graduate Shelby Gambrell earns All-HCAC softball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Shelby Gambrell, a first-year outfielder and graduate of Owen County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team as part of the champion Transylvania University Pioneers.

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jeff Meade, a senior golfer at Transylvania University and graduate of Paul Blazer High School, has been named to the GCAA Division III PING All-Region Team after a stellar season.
Meade led the Pioneers with a 72.7 scoring average per round for the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Pioneers, who won the title for the 10th straight year. He ended the season finishing tied for 40th in the NCAA Division III Men’s Championship, where the Pioneers finished tied for 12th as a team.
Dunbar graduate sweeps HCAC Track Athlete of the Year Awards
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Transylvania University junior and Paul Laurence Dunbar High School graduate Jordin Fender has cemented herself as one of the greatest track athletes in the history of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference this year, winning both the HCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year Awards.
Fender, who is also the starting point guard for the women’s basketball team, won conference championships in four indoor events (60 meter, 60 meter hurdles, 200 meter and 4x200 relay) and four outdoor events (100 meter, 100 meter hurdles, 200 meter and 4x100 relay). Her 26.15 time in the 200 meter and 14.57 time in the 100 meter hurdles both set conference records.

Perry County graduate Katelyn Smith named HCAC Freshman Golfer of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Katelyn Smith, a first-year golfer at Transylvania University and graduate of Muhlenberg County High School, was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Freshman Golfer of the Year.
Soderling led all freshmen in scoring at the HCAC Championship, finishing sixth overall with back-to-back scores of 88.
Pope John Paul II graduate Rachel Harrison named ORLC Offensive Player of the Year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Rachel Harrison, a senior attacker and graduate of Pope John Paul II High School, was named Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Offensive Player of the Year for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Harrison started all 17 games for the Pioneers and led the conference in goals with 67 to go along with eight assists. She finished 11th in the nation in total goals and ranked in the top 30 in goals per game and ground balls per game (4.35). She also set a school record for goals in a game with 11 against Thiel on April 10.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
Rose Hill graduate Olivia Kee earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Olivia Kee, a first-year runner and graduate of Rose Hill Academy, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Kee was part of the conference champion 4x100m relay team and finished third at the HCAC Championships in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.93. At the Pioneer Invitational, she won that same event.
Sacred Heart graduate Audrey Brown earns All-HCAC volleyball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Audrey Brown, a senior volleyball player and graduate of Sacred Heart High School, was named to Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year for Transylvania University.
The outside hitter finished the season with 498 digs, and her 6.32 digs per set ranked second in the HCAC.
South Oldham graduate Ben Erwin earns All-ORLC lacrosse honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Ben Erwin, a senior and graduate of South Oldham High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Valley Conference Honorable Mention Team after winning a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Erwin started 15 games for the Pioneers, scoring 17 goals and adding a team-high 15 assists. He also picked up 19 ground balls.
Southwestern graduate Shelby Auxier earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Shelby Auxier, a senior runner and graduate of Southwestern High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Auxier was part of the conference outdoor champion 4x100m relay and indoor champion 4x200m teams, and she finished sixth at the HCAC Championships in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.17.
Springboro graduate Katherine Stachowski earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Katherine Stachowski, a sophomore defender and graduate of Springboro High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference First Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Stachowski started all 17 games for the Pioneers and finished with 20 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers. She anchored a strong back line that led the conference in goals-against average with 7.98 per game.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
St. Francis de Sales graduate Lance Antoine wins ORLC championship

Riggs scored 25 goals and added six assists for the Pioneers. He picked up 53 ground balls, second-best on the team, and won 76 of his 121 face-offs.

LEXINGTON, Ky.—Evan Wright, a senior and graduate of Tates Creek High School, has won a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Wright appeared in 15 games for the Pioneers, scoring eight goals and adding six assists. He also picked up seven ground balls.
Tates Creek graduate Matthew Parker earns All-ORLC lacrosse honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Matthew Parker, a junior defender and graduate of Tates Creek High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Honorable Mention Team after winning a second consecutive Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers.
The Pioneers (10-6, 7-1 ORLC) defeated Washington & Jefferson College 10-6 on May 7 to earn the repeat title.
Parker started nine games for the Pioneers, picking up 22 ground balls and causing nine turnovers.
Tates Creek graduate Scottie Southall wins ORLC championship with Transylvania
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Scottie Southall, a first-year player and graduate of Tates Creek High School, has won the Ohio River Lacrosse Conference championship as a member of the Transylvania University Pioneers lacrosse team.

Watkins Memorial graduate Erin Marek wins HCAC track relay championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Erin Marek, a senior runner and graduate of Watkins Memorial High School, was part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference indoor champion 4x200 relay team for Transylvania University.
Marek, along with runners Savannah Hemmer, Jordin Fender and Shelby Auxier, finished with a school-record time of 1:46.07.
Webster County graduate Madison Townsend wins HCAC softball championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Madison Townsend, a first-year outfielder and graduate of Webster County High School, was part of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference champion Transylvania University Pioneers softball team.
The Pioneers (26-13, 14-2 HCAC) defeated Anderson University 9-5 in the final game of the season to wrap up a 14-2 conference slate and earn the regular season title in a year when the team was picked to finish second to last by a preseason coaches poll.
Townsend appeared in 15 games for the Pioneers.
Windsor graduate Joe Shermock wins ORLC championship

Owensboro Catholic graduate Josh Buckman earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Josh Buckman, a senior at Transylvania University and graduate of Owensboro Catholic High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for tennis.
Buckman played #4 singles and #3 doubles for the Pioneers, finishing 6-3 and 6-4, respectively. He helped Transylvania to a third-place conference finish.
Lafayette graduate Jamie Vescio wins Trow Scholarship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jamie Vescio, a sophomore at Transylvania University and a graduate of Lafeyette High School, has won the Jo Anne J. Trow Undergraduate Scholarship from the National Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society.
The scholarship is awarded to outstanding sophomores around the country to be used for their junior year of study. Vescio is double majoring in anthropology and French language and literature.
Adair County graduate Alexa Quiroz wins Ollie Hurst Award
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Alexa Quiroz, a Transylvania University junior and graduate of Adair County High School, has won the Ollie and Dick Hurst Award from the Rotary Club of Lexington. The honor is given to a student who demonstrates academic achievement and character and a willingness to work while carrying a full class load.
Quiroz, a biology major, is from Columbia, Ky. She is a Trailblazer scholar and part of the Student Activities Board, Chi Omega sorority and the Dean’s Advisory Group for the Prevention of Power-Based Personal Violence. She has aided in public health research at the University of Kentucky as a research assistant and will head to Mexico this summer to research mental health. She plans to attend medical school to become an emergency physician or OB/GYN.
Wheeling Park graduate Riley Bresnahan wins national debate championship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Riley Bresnahan, a Transylvania University sophomore and graduate of Wheeling Park High School, became Transylvania’s first-ever debate national champion at the Pi Kappa Delta National Forensics Tournament. She won the IPDA (one-on- one Parliamentary Debate) Junior Division.
Bresnahan, who is from Morgantown, W.Va., is a religion major and also plays lacrosse. She won five of her six preliminary rounds, won all three judges’ ballots in octo-finals and won three of the five ballots in the final round.
Holy Cross graduate Rachel Young earns KIIS Scholarship to study in Peru
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Rachel Young, a sophomore at Transylvania University and a graduate of Holy Cross High School, has earned a scholarship from the Kentucky Institute for International Studies to study in Peru for the summer. Young is a sociology major.
Elizabethtown graduate Reza Haider wins UK Cralle Fellowship
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Reza Haider, a Transylvania University senior and graduate of Elizabethtown Senior High School, has won the 2016-17 Cralle Foundation/Joan Cralle Day Fellowship by the University of Kentucky.
The fellowship, which will provide a full scholarship and stipend for his first year at the UK College of Medicine, is awarded to one student each year from a Kentucky independent college. Haider is the seventh Transylvania student to win the award in the past 14 years.
Haider, who is from Elizabethtown, Ky., is an economics major. He was inducted this year into the Holleian Society, which recognizes students for superior achievement in liberal arts studies. He is also a member of the tennis team.
Madison Central graduate Taylor Deaton wins Patriot Debates’ Varsity Division
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Taylor Deaton, a senior at Transylvania University and a graduate of Madison Central High School, won the Varsity Division IPDA Tournament Championship at the first annual Patriot Debates hosted by the University of the Cumberlands. Deaton defeated two of the South’s top IPDA debaters in the semifinals and finals.
Deaton—a writing, rhetoric, and communication major—was also recognized for finishing second in amount of total speaker points awarded by the judges.
West graduate Megan Wall earns HCAC soccer honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Megan Wall, a sophomore soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of West High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team.
Wall scored a goal on three shots and added an assist for the Pioneers. She started all 18 games as a critical member of the defensive unit.
Marion County graduate Noel Obata earns HCAC soccer honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Noel Obata, a first-year soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of Marion County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team.
Obata finished the season with nine points on three goals and two assists.
LCA graduate Maddie Sjogren earns HCAC soccer honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Maddie Sjogren, a first-year soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of Lexington Christian Academy High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team.
Sjogren scored a team-high seven goals and added three assists to lead the team with 17 points.
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Erin Koch, a junior soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of South Oldham High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team.
Koch scored one goal and added one assist and was a key piece of the defense for the Pioneers, which allowed just 1.6 goals per game.
Knoxville Catholic graduate Gabby Prevost earns HCAC soccer honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Gabby Prevost, a first-year soccer player at Transylvania University and graduate of Knoxville Catholic High School, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team.
The defender started 14 of the Pioneers’ 18 games.
Mercer County graduate Darby Bourdon earns All-HCAC volleyball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Darby Bourdon, a first-year volleyball player and graduate of Granville High School, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team for Transylvania University.
The middle hitter was had 97 kills and was first on the team in total blocks with 49 and second in solo blocks with 10.
Granville graduate Madison Lovern earns All-HCAC volleyball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Madison Lovern, a senior volleyball player and graduate of Granville High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for Transylvania University.
The outside hitter was second on the team in kills with 196 and added 224 points.
South Virgo graduate Marissa Coutinho earns All-HCAC volleyball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Marissa Coutinho, a sophomore volleyball player and graduate of Terre Haute South Virgo High School, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team for Transylvania University.
Coutinho finished second on the team with 391 digs and third with 33 service aces.
Ballard graduate Cody Waltrip earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Cody Waltrip, a senior soccer player and graduate of Ballard High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for Transylvania University.
Waltrip started 16 games as a goalkeeper for the Pioneers, leading the HCAC in goals-against average with 0.68 per game and an 87 percent save percentage.
Brentwood graduate Blake Chidester earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Blake Chidester, a junior soccer player and graduate of Brentwood High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for Transylvania University.
Chidester started all 19 games for the Pioneers, finishing second on the team in goals (5) and points (16) and leading the club with a six assists.
Trinity graduate Jacob Gantt earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jacob Gantt, a sophomore soccer player and graduate of Trinity High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for Transylvania University.
Gantt, who was also selected to the conference All-Sportsmanship Team, started all 19 games for the Pioneers and took five shots on goal.
Mount Notre Dame graduate Allyson Benz earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Allyson Benz, a first-year lacrosse player and graduate of Mount Notre Dame High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for Transylvania University.
Benz started 12 games for the Pioneers as a goalkeeper, finishing with a team-high 125 saves and a 4.50 goals-against average.
Franklin County graduate Lilian Williams earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Lilian Williams, a sophomore tennis player and graduate of Franklin County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for Transylvania University.
Williams played #3 singles and #2 doubles for the Pioneers, finishing 2-6 and 3-3, respectively.
Southwestern graduate Kearstin Bruther earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kearstin Bruther, a first-year tennis player and graduate of Southwestern County High School, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Sportsmanship Team for Transylvania University.
Bruther played #5 singles for the Pioneers, finishing a perfect 3-0.
Madison Southern graduate Kristen Hayes earns All-HCAC basketball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kristen Hayes, a first-year point guard and graduate of Madison Southern High School, was named to the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference All-Freshman Team for Transylvania University.
Hayes was one of the top-five scorers in the HCAC, averaging 15.1 points per game before a season-ending knee injury in January. She averaged 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game.
St. Xavier graduate Alex Jones earns All-HCAC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Alex Jones, a junior basketball player and graduate of St. Xavier High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team for Transylvania University.
Jones led the Pioneers in scoring with 16.4 points per game and was second in the HCAC in assists per game with 4.5. He scored 64 points in the Pioneers’ two conference tournament games this season and became Transylvania’s 47th 1,000-point scorer Feb. 13.
Boyle County graduate Kody Ross earns All-HCAC baseball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kody Ross, a senior second baseman and graduate of Boyle County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Ross batted .323 with two home runs and 25 RBI for the Pioneers, and he led the club with 14 doubles. He added 11 stolen bases and 33 runs scored, both second on the team, and he committed just seven errors in 191 chances.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
St. Henry graduate Rex Rogers earns All-HCAC baseball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Rex Rogers, a sophomore third baseman and graduate of St. Henry High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Rogers batted .348 with one home run and 17 RBI for the Pioneers, and he led the club with a .470 on-base percentage.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
Scott County graduate Hunter Jones earns All-HCAC baseball honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Hunter Jones, a senior outfielder and graduate of Scott County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Jones batted .286 with a home run for the Pioneers, amassing a team-high 35 RBI and adding three stolen bases.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
South Oldham graduate Braden Johnson earns All-HCAC pitching honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Braden Johnson, a junior pitcher and graduate of South Oldham High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Second Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Johnson was second on the team with 78 innings pitched, and he finished the season with an 8-3 record and 4.96 ERA. His 47 strikeouts were second on the team compared to just 10 walks.

Old Mill graduate Kate Winkelmeyer earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kate Winkelmeyer, a sophomore defender and graduate of Old Mill High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Second Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Winkelmeyer started all 17 games for the Pioneers and finished with 13 ground balls and six caused turnovers. She anchored a strong back line that led the conference in goals-against average with 7.98 per game.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
St. Henry graduate Jessica Bier earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Jessica Bier, a senior midfielder and graduate of St. Henry District High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Honorable Mention Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Bier started all 17 games for the Pioneers and finished with 27 goals and 12 assists. She also picked up a team-high 77 ground balls and caused 22 turnovers.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
Male graduate Lydia Shaughnessy earns All-ORLC honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Lydia Shaughnessy, a senior goalkeeper and graduate of Male High School, was named to the All-Ohio River Lacrosse Conference Honorable Mention Team for the Transylvania University Pioneers.
Shaughnessy has played in goal in all four years of Transylvania’s young program. This year she made 93 saves and had a record of 11-3. She led the league in goals-against average with 7.94 per game.
The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 ORLC) finished second in the conference, their best finish in the team’s history.
Elder graduate Luke Groene earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Luke Groene, a sophomore at Transylvania University and graduate of Elder High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for tennis.
Groene played #5 singles and #2 doubles for the Pioneers, going 6-3 and 5-2, respectively, helping the Pioneers to a third-place conference finish.
Dylan Conner earns All-HCAC tennis honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Dylan Conner, a senior at Transylvania University, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team for tennis.
Conner played #3 singles and #1 doubles for the Pioneers, finishing 4-7 and 2-5, respectively. He helped Transylvania to a third-place conference finish.
LCA graduate Robert Albrecht earns All-HCAC tennis honors for fourth year
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Robert Albrecht, a senior at Transylvania University and graduate of Lexington Christian Academy High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team for the fourth consecutive season.
Albrecht played #1 singles and doubles for the Pioneers, finishing 5-8 and 3-3, respectively. He helped Transylvania to a third-place conference finish.
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Zach Meikle, a senior at Transylvania University and graduate of West Jessamine High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team after helping the Pioneers to a third-place conference finish.
Meikle played #2 singles and #1 doubles for the Pioneers, finishing 8-5 and 3-3, respectively.
Boone County graduate Kameron Schwartz earns All-HCAC pitching honors
LEXINGTON, Ky.—Kameron Schwartz, a senior pitcher and graduate of Boone County High School, was named to the All-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention Team after helping lead the Transylvania Pioneers to a 17-9 conference record.
Schwartz had a team-best ERA of 3.07 over 29 1/3 innings over 15 appearances, mostly from the bullpen. He struck out 26 batters and gave up just 10 runs all season.
The Pioneers (22-19, 17-9 HCAC) finished second in the conference, their best record since 2008.
