FAFSA

Federal Student Aid

Filing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year is the most important step toward receiving federal aid funds (loans, grants and work-study) and aid directly from Transylvania. The 2024-25 FAFSA is expected to become available sometime in December 2023. Virtually every Transy applicant who completes the FAFSA is offered some form of aid, with an average package of approximately $34,000 per year.

Take a look at how easy it is to complete the FAFSA, and feel free to contact our admissions counselors, who are always available to help you one-on-one through the process.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • An FSA ID (Don’t have an ID? Create one here.)
  • Identification documents (driver’s license, social security card, permanent residence card, etc.) for you and your parents
  • Financial documents (W-2s, tax documents)
  • Transylvania’s School ID: 001987

Special Circumstances

Transylvania University offers scholarships, grants, loans, and work opportunities to supplement the resources of students and their families. Many of these financial aid resources require the student and family to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) in order to be considered.

The FAFSA uses a Federal Methodology to calculate a family’s ability to contribute to their student’s college expenses. The Financial Aid Office understands that special circumstances may arise when the Federal Methodology does not accurately reflect a family’s true ability to contribute to the cost of education. Students who believe their circumstances warrant reconsideration of their eligibility should contact the financial aid office to discuss their situation.

Based upon the receipt and review of specific documentation, the Financial Aid Office may exercise Professional Judgment and make adjustments to a student’s financial aid eligibility. Professional Judgment is the ability of the financial aid office to make adjustments to a student’s aid eligibility on a case-by-case basis. The adjustments may be made to the cost of attendance or to a data element required to calculate the student’s expected family contribution (EFC).

A special circumstance is typically an unplanned situation which might result in a reduction in parental income or an increase in the family’s uncontrollable expenses. To discuss your situation, please contact the Financial Aid Office.
