Supporting your student through career and world exploration

Career Development

The Center for Academic and Professional Enrichment partners with students and alumni to meet their career goals. Families play an important role in supporting students through the career exploration and preparation process. We recommend students create a four-year plan for success. Families can encourage their students through the process.

Ways you can support your student

• Choosing a major
  Encourage your student to take an assessment with CAPE to help determine strengths and interests. Keep in mind that a major will not determine what they do for the rest of their life.
• Career exploration
  Encourage your student to schedule a career counseling session with CAPE.
• Summer and part-time work 
  CAPE staff can help students find summer opportunities that will provide valuable experiences.
• Network
  Encourage your student to expand their network both on campus and off. Campus involvement looks great on a resume and helps students make connections and get leadership experience. Introduce students to people in your network.
• Internships
  Internships provide an excellent way for students to gain practical experience and increase their network. Oftentimes, internships lead to full-time jobs upon graduation.
• 100 Doors to Success
  Encourage your student to sign up for a mentor through the 100 Doors to Success mentoring program.

Pre-Health Preparation

Transylvania has a comprehensive support system for pre-health students. It begins with an advising meeting during orientation week for first-year pre-health students and continues through senior year by helping students prepare for medical and graduate school interviews.

Supporting your student interested in a career in healthcare

• Remind them to meet with Pre-Health Adviser Robin Prichard.
• Encourage them to find shadowing opportunities and summer jobs in health care.
• Connect them with people you know in health care.
• Encourage them to get a mentor through the 100 Doors program or elsewhere.

Study Abroad

The Office of Global and Intercultural Engagement supports international opportunities for students during their time at Transy and beyond. They can choose from study abroad programs in more than 50 countries to find the opportunity that best fits their academic goals, extracurricular and work schedules and budget.

Studying abroad is a great way for students to increase self-confidence and independence, engage in experiential learning and build a strong resume — all while earning university credit that transfers back to Transy.

What you should know about studying abroad

• Start early!
  The earlier students start exploring options, the more possibilities that will be available. Encourage your student to set up an appointment during their first semester on campus in order to maximize the possibilities on campus.  
• Family support is fundamental
  Start these conversations with your student.
• There IS funding
  Scholarships are available through Transy thanks to generous donors, and we work with students on applications to outside scholarships offered by the U.S. government and by organizations such as the Fund for Education Abroad.
• Flexible timelines
  Students can study abroad as part of a semester, summer or May term, or a through a short-term (winter break) program. Many students also complete more than one study abroad experience during their time at Transy.
• Comprehensive support
  Students have the option of taking credit-bearing courses related to studying abroad. The pre-study abroad Global Engagements course prepares students for the international experience, while the post-study abroad Global Reflections course provides a space for reflection and dialogue about the experience in the context of the student’s academic and professional plans.
