Transylvania University is joining other Lexington colleges later this month in celebrating the city’s rich tradition of higher education.
The school welcomes visitors March 28 and 29 as part of the 250LEX College Town Showcase with tours, sports events and cultural offerings like the Judy Gaines Young Book Award ceremony, Special Collections tours and a senior art exhibition. Get the details.
Mayor Linda Gorton and representatives from local colleges gathered at Transylvania today to announce the showcase, which is part of the city’s yearlong 250th anniversary salute. Each month has a different focus with March being dedicated to education.
“Since our earliest days, our city has been a hub for education,” Gorton said. “The very first university west of the Allegheny Mountains, Transylvania University, was founded in 1780. So in five short years, in 2030, Transy will celebrate its 250th anniversary.”
President Brien Lewis noted his school’s deep community roots and looks forward to the events later this month. “We’re incredibly proud to partner with 250LEX, UK and BCTC to showcase the educational opportunities available in Lexington. We welcome visitors to our campus to witness not only our history, but our commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders and innovators, building upon our long legacy of academic excellence and community engagement.”
Megan Moloney, Transylvania’s vice president for marketing and communications and a 250Lex Commission member, also encouraged local residents to take part in the upcoming events. “The 250Lex College Town Showcase is a celebration of the past, present and future of higher education in Lexington,” she said. “We invite the community on campus to see firsthand the collective impact of our institutions and how we help so many discover their paths to success right here in our vibrant city.”
Transylvania also participated in the 250Lex Basketball Week in January.
