Transylvania University leveling up esports program with match commentary

When Dylan Osborne played competitive esports in college, his parents would watch some of the matches streamed online without commentary. They didn’t know what was going on, but they watched.

Now that he’s coach of Transylvania University’s esports program, parents can cheer on their Pioneers — and know what’s happening. That’s because Osborne is providing commentary for select matches live via the team’s Twitch channel.

Which particular games he commentates on vary week to week — for this spring’s season, Transylvania is competing in League of Legends, Overwatch 2, Chess, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Marvel Rivals and Rocket League. In past seasons, volunteer commentators have joined him, including students and Campus Center director Ryan Benjamin. Members of the campus community should email Osborne if they’re interested in doing so.

In addition to providing necessary context for non-gaming spectators, stream commentary can include details like the roles of various players, their chemistry together and analysis of the opposing team.

Some of it is fast paced with nonstop talking — such as in a high-energy game like Overwatch, where a character can die but spawn back in seconds to rejoin the fight. Others, like League of Legends, can at times involve long stretches where gamers are just getting into position for a battle or just walking somewhere; that’s when Osborne can delve into topics like strategy and what he expects might happen next.

In addition to his play-by-play, viewers can comment on the action during the livestream. “It’s still interactive for people who do know the game,” Osborne said. “They can absolutely engage with me no matter what their experience level is with whatever game we’re streaming that day.”

His program is off to a successful start since launching in 2023 with back-to-back championships and most teams making the playoffs this past fall season.

Thanks to Osborne’s commentary, fans can cheer these Pioneers on throughout their matches — instead of just at the final victory screen.
