Transylvania University continues to grow its esports offerings with a new summer camp for middle school students.

The program, which is free this first time, is July 15-16 from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. each day in the Thomson Hall esports arena.

The campers will learn how to provide commentary for gameplay and build and maintain their own PCs. They’ll also get lessons on being part of a competitive gaming squad — for instance: Don’t get so wrapped up in what’s happening on your own screen that you ignore the fact that each teammate supporting you has a different perspective on the action.

Several spots out of a total of 12 gamers are still open. Register here.

“I’m looking forward to having them on campus,” Transylvania esports coach Dylan Osborne said. He noted the camp is geared toward students with little or no experience — it’s a “first step into entering the world of esports.”

The campers will have an expert guide in Osborne. His teams won two conference championships in their first two seasons of competition last spring and fall.

Transylvania will have strong rosters for the new season this fall — especially in Overwatch and Valorant — as they compete in the National Esports Collegiate Conference.

In addition to collegiate gaming, Transylvania hosted a tournament between local elementary schools in March, drawing around 30 students. “It helped us foster a good relationship with the Fayette County Public Schools,” Osborne said. “It was a really great time.”
