Transylvania University plays a significant role in driving economic growth in Lexington and across the commonwealth according to a new study.
The newly released Association of Independent Kentucky Colleges and Universities Economic Impact Study reveals that Kentucky’s 18 independent, nonprofit colleges and universities, including Transylvania, contribute a combined $2.06 billion to the state and local economies.
“In addition to providing widespread access to higher education and helping develop Kentucky’s skilled workforce, AIKCU’s member colleges and universities are anchor institutions in communities throughout the commonwealth,” said AIKCU President Mason Dyer. “These numbers reinforce our long-held belief that the investment in state aid for students attending independent colleges and universities represent one of the best rates of return on investment for the commonwealth.”
Transylvania, a member of AIKCU, is a key contributor to this economic engine generating $66.3 million in total economic impact, while benefiting local businesses, creating jobs and attracting talent to the region.
Beyond its direct economic contributions, Transylvania plays a crucial role in developing Kentucky’s workforce, preparing graduates for success in a variety of fields and equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to thrive in the 21st-century economy.
“Transylvania graduates are ready to lead,” said President Brien Lewis. “We empower them with the critical thinking, collaborative spirit and clear communication skills they need to excel in today’s economy and shape tomorrow’s world. The economic impact of Transylvania is undeniable, but our most profound impact is on the lives and careers of our graduates.”
“We’ve long known the positive impact Transylvania has on generations of Kentuckians,” Lewis continued. “This report provides the data to support that, demonstrating our value to Lexington and the state, and reinforcing our commitment to contributing to a thriving community.”
AIKCU commissioned this report from Mark Paul Gius, professor of economics at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut.
