Acclaimed journalist Maria Hinojosa will give Transylvania University’s William R. Kenan Jr. Lecture on Tuesday, Feb. 11.

The public is invited to the annual talk at 7 p.m. in Haggin Auditorium followed by a book signing. Reserve free tickets to the event, which will be livestreamed.

Hinojosa is the anchor and executive producer of “Latino USA,” a Peabody Award-winning show distributed by NPR and co-host of Futuro Media’s new political podcast “In The Thick.”

She founded Futuro Media Group in New York as a nonprofit newsroom “in the service of empowering people to navigate the complexities of an increasingly diverse and connected world.”

Hinojosa is also anchor and executive producer of the PBS show “America By The Numbers” and the digital video series “Humanizing America.”

Among her many accolades are four Emmys, the John Chancellor Award, Studs Terkel Community Media Award, two Robert F. Kennedy Awards, Edward R. Murrow Award and Ruben Salazar Lifetime Achievement Award. Additionally, her alma mater Barnard College named her the inaugural Distinguished Journalist in Residence in 2019.

Her Feb. 11 talk is part of this year’s Creative Intelligence series themed “Figuring Our Hope,” which was inspired by Wendell Berry’s poem “Testament.”

“It calls on us to draw on our available resources, including art and community, while we live through difficult times,” said Kremena Todorova, an English professor and Creative Intelligence director. “And it affirms the power to be found in human connections.”

Over the decades, the Kenan series has drawn such notables as Kurt Vonnegut, Salman Rushdie, Elie Wiesel and former U.S. Poet Laureate Joy Harjo.
