Transylvania University’s field hockey team collected donations of food and hygiene items along with notes of encouragement earlier this week for those impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton.
The squad is still accepting donations through today via Venmo.
Ava Weissman ’27 came up with the idea after her church did a similar drive. She talked to Fox 56 about her team’s effort and how she was inspired by her classmates wanting to make a difference in the world.
“Seeing our team really dive head first into this, and to see the amount of students that cared enough to make a donation or write a card was so inspiring,” Weissman said. “Thank you so much to every person that made a card or a donation — the impact we as a school have made is outstanding.”
Head coach Natalie Hernandez was also pleased to see so much of the campus community come together to support the mission. “As a coach, I am so proud to see my team help raise donations along with words of encouragement,” she said. “Thank you to everyone who donated items, money or time — it truly means a lot to the hurricane victims and our field hockey team.”
