Transylvania University is celebrating 213 graduating seniors at Saturday’s commencement on Old Morrison Lawn.
The 9 a.m. ceremony will feature two student addresses, the conferring of Bachelor of Arts degrees and other speakers offering advice and words of encouragement as the Class of 2024 prepares for life after graduation. Watch the livestream here, and get details in case of rain, which would move the event into the Beck Center.
Transylvania’s graduating seniors have many achievements to be proud of. More than half are graduating with Latin honors (3.5 GPA or higher) and with honors in individual programs.
Of this year’s seniors, 44% are headed to graduate or professional school — the same number of those who plan to join the workforce in a variety of fields, from accounting to teaching to data science. Others are strengthening their resumes through programs like the Peace Corps and postbaccalaureate research at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland.
The speakers for this year’s commencement are Em Spencer, an art history major and women’s, gender and sexuality minor from Georgetown, Kentucky; and Katy Walsh, an English major and writing, rhetoric and communication minor from Lexington. Spencer, who was a golf team and choir member, vice president of Phi Mu and an admissions ambassador, plans to pursue a master’s degree at Syracuse University. And Walsh, who was a First Engagements scholar, Writing Center staffer, Transylvanian editor-in-chief and SGA senator, is headed to law school.
