Transylvania University is ready to play some ball.

The school’s baseball and softball teams — both of which cracked the nation’s top 20 this season — are swinging into NCAA Division III tournament action beginning Thursday.

Transylvania baseball hosts Spalding, Birmingham-Southern and Beloit in the regionals Friday through Sunday at Legends Field, a professional stadium that’s home to the Pioneers.

On Friday at 2:30 p.m., Transylvania faces Birmingham-Southern led by former Pioneers coach Jan Weisberg.

With a 32-12 record, the baseball squad received good news Wednesday when the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference named standout senior Trent Youngblood its Player of the Year.

He and his teammates are bringing quite a bit of enthusiasm into the tournament. (It’s the first time the program has hosted the regionals.)

Transylvania softball, ranked No. 22 in the nation, also recently received conference honors as senior Carlee Jeter was named Pitcher of the Year and Dakota Burke received the Newcomer of the Year recognition.

After winning back-to-back conference crowns, the 34-8 Pioneers play Huntingdon College on Thursday at 2:30 p.m. CDT in Montgomery, Alabama.
