In a rematch of last season’s NCAA Sweet 16, Transylvania takes on No. 11 Berry College on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in the Beck Center. Transy made it to the Elite Eight last year with 28 wins, the most in program history.
On Saturday, the Pioneers face No. 7 Calvin University at 12:30 p.m. and then Illinois Wesleyan at 5:30.
Among the returning players from last year’s talented team is All-American setter Grace Ward ’24, the 2022 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the year and NCAA Statistical Leader for most assists per set in a season: 11.2.
Ward noted the closeness of her winning squad, how they’re her best friends. “If I had to pick one group of people to hang out with all the time, it would be them,” she said. “On the court, we’re together, one, with one goal with our coaches and our staff.”
Other Pioneers coming back for this season include HCAC standouts Cate Scheper, Kayden Holcomb and Isabella Myers.
Coach Amy Barmore is 109-38 in five seasons as head coach.
