Alvin “Guy” Waldrop, Transylvania alumnus and lifetime member of the Board of Trustees, died on June 2 at the age of 86.
While at Transylvania, Waldrop was a member of Phi Kappa Tau. He and his late wife Nell Robinson Waldrop graduated from the university in 1959, and both remained deeply involved with their alma mater. Waldrop served on the Alumni Executive Board from 1969-72 and began his service on the Board of Trustees in 1981, eventually receiving lifetime trustee status, an honor currently only held by six individuals.
Waldrop dedicated his career to the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), serving as the executive director of the Council of College and University Presidents of the Christian Church, as well as regional minister for the Christian Church from 1981-2001. He served congregations in both Kentucky and Alabama, and was a former trustee and chairman of the board at Lexington Theological Seminary, where he also earned his Master of Divinity Degree in 1963.
Waldrop held positions on the General Board of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the U.S. and Canada, as well as numerous other DOC-related state and national leadership roles. A 100 Doors mentor, he was a member of the Robert Barr Society Council and a member of the Campaign Advisory Committee at Transylvania. He also served as a trustee at Midway College from 1986-94.
For his many years of service to the university, Waldrop was honored with the Morrison Medallion in 1990, as well as the Distinguished Service award in 2002. He received an honorary doctorate from Transylvania in 1982 and was honored by the university on National Philanthropy Day in 2018.
