Transylvania University on Thursday celebrated this year’s Juried Student Art Show winners in Morlan Gallery.
Showcasing Pioneers of all majors in a range of media — from sculpture to video to drawing — the exhibition runs through May 19 with a closing-night reception during the LexArts HOP from 5-8.
“This year, we have 101 pieces of artwork in this exhibition, with close to 200 submissions overall,” Morlan director Anthony Mead said. “The selected works and ‘best of’ awards were chosen by a group of jurors who had a challenging time picking due to the incredibly high level of work throughout the exhibition.”
Among the recognitions each year is the Dean’s Purchase Award. Kayla Bushman won this show’s honor with a gouache painting titled “Thursday Morning in Brown.”
“I selected Kayla’s piece for the accomplished skill of gouache painting that went into making it and because it transported me back to the many hours spent in lab settings when I was a student — the curiosity that drives experimentation and the excitement of getting interesting results,” Dean Rebecca Thomas said. “I am very pleased to have Kayla’s painting remain at Transy as part of our permanent collection of student artwork.”
