Transylvania University juniors Emily Cecil and Zach Hall have received this year’s Abbott Art Scholarship for their scholastic and studio excellence and promise.
Established in 1986 by the family of professor Jack Girard, the scholarship honors the memory of grandparents Mildred and Harold Abbott, both patrons and practitioners in the visual and performing arts.
“Over the years we’ve seen Abbott recipients excel in a variety of ways,” Girard said. “Most continue with postgraduate studies of some sort and develop into college- and secondary-level teachers, museum and gallery curators, scholars, business owners and freelance artists. We are excited about the potential Emily and Zach have shown and are certain they will flourish in their years after Transylvania.”
Now a total of $1,900, the scholarship has grown from a small award to one that provides “significant financial support for students majoring in art or art history,” Girard said.
The winners were announced during this year’s virtual Juried Student Art Show.
