Beginning Tuesday, Transylvania University’s Morlan Gallery will celebrate the works of the late Dan Selter. The renowned ceramist and professor emeritus of art taught at the school for 35 years until his retirement in 2010.
Running through Oct. 11, the exhibit “A Matter of the Heart: The Dan Selter Retrospective” will feature a variety of Selter’s pieces spanning the decades — from whimsical fountains to works from his critically acclaimed “Comparative Religions” series.
“Dan was a master ceramist and a brilliant professor, and his art reflected his humorous wit,” Morlan Gallery Director Andrea Fisher said. “He inspired countless students to explore the unusual — and to find beauty wherever they went.”
There will be an opening reception and sale of Selter’s studio work on Thursday, Sept. 12, from 5-8 p.m. in the gallery and Haggin Auditorium foyer. The sale will include vases, mugs and other vessels.
The show is also a featured stop on the LexArts HOP from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 20.
Alongside this exhibit, Morlan will feature “Forest Portals: Pine Mountain (Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall),” an immersive video installation by Transylvania art professor Zoé Strecker.
Morlan Gallery shows are free and open to the public, and plenty of nearby parking is available. The gallery is open weekdays, noon to 5 p.m., and by special appointment.
