“It’s not you, it’s me.”
Though typically used in an awkward break-up with a significant other, this phrase can also work on breaking up with a college.
Yes, we said “breaking up with a college.”
Think of it this way: Imagine you are asked to prom by two people: one a great friend and someone you know you could enjoy prom with, and the other, your dream date. You accept the offer from your dream date. Then comes the not-so-fun part…letting the other one know.
It will be hard to tell your friend that you found someone who’s just a better fit for you. It’s often uncomfortable and stressful, but it isn’t fair to keep them on the line, is it? It’s time to have that “It’s not you, it’s me” talk.
It’s the same with picking your perfect college. You’ve received your offers and now you need to respond. It’s a step that many students don’t take but one that is greatly appreciated by the colleges and counselors that have recruited you for months, and in some cases, years!
As college admissions professionals, we’ve not only invested time working with you but we’ve also become personally invested in you. We don’t want to waste your time or clog your mailbox; it’s time to let us know. And guess what? Even if you didn’t choose to come to our school…we are HAPPY for you. We promise. Will we be a bit sad? Sure. But, will we also be thrilled that you’ve found your home? Absolutely.
Though you have until May 1 to make your decision, if your decision is made, make sure you pick up the phone or send out an email.
Of all the break-ups that may happen in your lifetime, we promise this one will be the easiest, happiest, and most joyful one you’ll ever make!
