Recycling Guidelines
Transylvania’s recycling program follows the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Government guidelines, available at lfucg.com. The blue recycling bins in residence halls are for the following items, and are not for general garbage.
- Paper Products
- Boxboard (cereal, cracker, cake mix, spaghetti boxes with lining removed)
- Brown paper bags
- Catalogs
- Pizza boxes
- Corrugated cardboard (remove any packing material)
- Magazines
- Newspapers, with inserts
- Office and school papers
- Phone books
- Unwanted mail, fliers, and door hangers
- Cans
- Aerosol (empty only)
- Aluminum cans
- Steel food cans (please rinse, labels can stay on)
- Plastic
- Bottles and jugs made of #1 or #2 plastic only (soda, milk, water, juice, detergent, bleach, fabric softener)
- Glass
Transylvania partners with TerraCycle, a company that collects items that are normally landfill-bound. TerraCycle makes a variety of products out of this “trash” and pays Transylvania for each item collected. This income supports our battery recycling program. Items TerraCycle accepts are:
- Candy wrappers (Mars/Wrigley and Cadbury)
- Skittles
- M&Ms
- Swedish fish
- Twix
- Snickers
- Sour Patch Kids
- Etc.
- Cookie wrappers (Nabisco and Keebler)
- Chip bags
- Lays
- Doritos
- Cheetos
- Fritos
- Energy bar wrappers
- Gum wrappers (ALL wrapping - blister packs, individual wrappers, cellophane wrapper, packages, etc.)
- Trident
- Dentyne
- Stride
- Bubblicious
- Writing instruments
- Colgate waste
- Toothbrushes
- Empty toothpaste tubes
- Packaging for toothbrushes & toothpaste
- Cheese packaging
- Kraft singles
- Kraft string cheese
- Polly-O string cheese
- Philadelphia cream cheese
- Kraft natural cheese
- Cracker Barrel cheese
- Velveeta
- Kraft grated parmesan
- Athenos
- Breakston’s
- Knudsen
- Scotch brand tape dispensers
- Elmer’s glue waste
