Students interested in anthropology and sociology pursue a variety of graduate and professional school opportunities and enter a broad range of occupations that involve understanding and working with people. Majors and minors in these disciplines have a solid foundation for work and further training in such areas as sociology, social psychology, anthropology, archaeology, government, and human services. In the last decade, for example, the number of sociologists in business has doubled and the percentage of anthropologists working outside the universities has increased sixfold.

Transy offers majors in anthropology, sociology, and sociology/anthropology, as well as minors in anthropology and sociology. Collectively, these disciplines focus on the systematic study of human behavior, both of individuals and groups. Topics of study include human origins, the family, race and ethnicity, health care systems, gender, inequality, social and cultural change, religion, deviance, and crime. Sociology and anthropology courses are particularly helpful for a variety of service careers or for entering professional training in law, business, and economic development overseas. All students take a common core of theory and methods courses in addition to a senior seminar/capstone course.

In order to broaden their knowledge and experience, our students are encouraged to participate in the many available internship, voluntary service, and summer employment opportunities.
