About the Program

[about us]

We are more than our regular courses....

Past years have seen a thriving English club, with students organizing events that let them pursue their interests together. Students have been involved too in the visits to campus by the Delcamp Visiting Writers—and are always welcome at the weekly Film Junkies screenings.

In the daily life of campus, English majors find a home in our campus media, serving on the staff of the campus newspaper, The Rambler, and sustaining our campus literature and arts magazine, The Transylvanian (the oldest university literary journal west of the Alleghenies, first published in 1892).

They take advantage of internship possibilities developed from within the Career Development Center.  English majors have found valuable experience working with the Lexington Herald-Leader, Kentucky Educational Television (KET), and various community organizations. English majors with an eye on law school have found work as 'runners' for nearby law firms, situated conveniently downtown.

Students taking English classes have enjoyed travel courses during May Term, visiting cities in both the United States and England, and English majors and minors have gained rich experience, both personal and academic, from studying abroad, either during summer or for a full semester.
