Visiting Writers

In 1996, the English Program received a grant to endow a Visiting Writer Series from Mr. James Dick, a Transylvania alumnus who has had a successful career in the communications industry. Mr. Dick's gift was made to honor one of his outstanding teachers, Dr. Ernest Woodruff Delcamp, who was also an alumnus of Transylvania. Dr. Delcamp returned here to teach Latin in 1908 but continued his studies and held positions as both Professor of English and Head of the Music Department before his death in 1952.

Delcamp Update!

We are delighted to announce a reading by noted author, C.E. Morgan. For more information.
The Delcamp Visiting Writer travels to Transylvania in either the Fall or Winter terms for a visit of two days, giving a public reading on the first evening and then meeting the next day with students. The public reading has always been well attended, with audience members coming from across the region; and students from a range of literature classes have taken real pleasure in the opportunity to meet and talk with an author whose work they are studying.

Bobby Ann Mason inaugurated the Delcamp series with a reading of her fiction in the Fall of 1997 and since then we have invited poets and fiction writers in alternate years.
