Artist's Talk: "Humanexus the Film -- Humanity Through Time and Technology", by Norbert Herber Free and Open to the Public Norbert Herbert discusses the ideas behind and the making of the thought-provoking film Humanexus, which reflects on mankind's long search for ways to connect each other, from cave drawings to tweeting. With significant changes in methods and tools, from very subtle processes of exchange, conversations, and to today's mass communication and shiny new technologies, the sharing of messages, ideas, and thoughts has become easier. Studio 300 Artist's Talk: "Bouncing: an interactive audio-visual installation", demonstration by Krzysztof Wolek & Zach Thomas Free and Open to the Public Krzysztof Wolek and Zach Thomas discuss and demonstrate the developed technologies and musical organization behind their interactive audio-visual installation Bouncing. It uses a kinect controller to project an avatar of the user inside of a virtual room which is, in a way, a reflection of the space the user is standing in. Collisions with the bouncing objects inside of the virtual room give the sound feedback and help to create a sound composition in 4 channels surround space, thus blending virtual and actual space. Kenan Lecture: Michele Norris

Michele Norris is a host and special correspondent for National Public Radio and previously was co-host of All Things Considered, public radio’s longest-running national program. In 2012 she developed The Race Card Project, an initiative to foster a wider conversation about race in America. Her book, The Grace of Silence: A Memoir, focuses on how America talks about race in the wake of Barack Obama’s presidential election and explores her own family’s racial legacy. Panel Discussion on Hate Crimes

In honor of the 15th anniversary of the death of Matthew Shepard, Transylvania's Diversity Action Council leads a panel discussion about hate crimes. The discussion will focus on legal matters related to hate crime legislation, Title IX, and trends in hate crimes. Panelists include Transylvania professors Don Dugi and Brian Rich; Ashley Gutshall, Transylvania's Green Dot program coordinator; and Raymond Sexton, the executive director of the Lexington/Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission.

Life Through the Eyes of a Naturalized Citizen: The Refugee Perspective

This event will serve as a follow-up to Constitution Day, celebrated a few weeks ago, and feature a discussion of the U.S. Constitution from the point of view of naturalized citizens. A representative from Kentucky Refugee Ministries will also speak about related refugee issues. This will be followed by viewing videos that simulate what English sounds like to non-native speakers, taking part of the citizenship test, and participating in small-group discussions of the refugee experience.
