Computer science is one of the most popular majors at Transylvania, and our program has been cited for excellence by the National Science Foundation. A major and a minor in computer science are offered.

As a computer science major, you will take six core courses in computer science, emphasizing breadth in the field. You will then choose four other high-level computer science courses, allowing you to tailor the major to your specific interests. In addition, you may choose to do an independent study project as a junior or senior, or a senior honors project with a professor, allowing for depth in a particular area.

You will have the opportunity to gain practical experience in computer science by doing an internship with a local company. Firms such as IBM, Lexmark, Humana, General Electric, Perot Systems, Ashland Oil Inc., and James River offer students part-time, off-campus employment for course credit.

Computers for student use are available in the residence halls, library, and in many classroom buildings. You may also connect your own personal computer to our network and to the Internet from your residence hall room. A separate Unix-based lab featuring Silicon Graphics workstations is available to computer science majors.

Transylvania has an active chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery, giving you even more opportunities for involvement with other students who share your interest, as well as professionals in the field.
