Transylvania has recently begun a classics major, which will give you an understanding of the Greco-Roman World. This study provides a strong foundation for understanding the Western cultural tradition and its role in the development of modern values, law, medicine, philosophy, economics, history, literature, and art.
Statistics show that the study of Latin gives students an advantage in scoring well on tests like the Graduate Record Exam (GRE), and according to Harvard Magazine, law schools report that their top students come from mathematics, the classics, and literature. Because practically every term in medicine derives from Latin or Greek, medical students benefit greatly from having a background in these languages.
The Transy Edge
Transylvania’s approach to the classics major is intensely interdisciplinary, giving students the advantage of taking courses from a range of academic areas while building their major. For example, in addition to courses specifically in the classics program, students might take Ancient Greek and Roman Philosophy, Art History: Ancient to Gothic, and Political Theory I: Classical and Medieval. There are several programs that allow students to travel and study in Greece, Turkey, and Italy.
