Transylvania’s Information Technology (IT) department provides campus-wide hardware, software, telephone, and network (wired and wireless) support. Students are provided access to computers and network printers both in computer labs and in the classroom. Over 200 computers are available for students in lab settings, many of them 24 hours a day. In addition to supporting desktop hardware, IT maintains Transylvania’s network; provides anti-virus / anti-spyware resources; monitors network intrusions; provides access to academic programs such as Moodle, Microsoft Office, Maple, and SPSS; maintains Transylvania’s e-mail services; and supports the campus telephone network. IT has begun the transition to virtualization of campus file servers and deployment of “thin client” hardware at various campus locations.
Students living in the residence hall have the option of connecting their personal computers, smart phones, and gaming devices to Transylvania’s network. IT troubleshoots network connections for students, removes viruses and spyware, and provides access to hardware and software at reduced prices -- all free of charge. Anti-virus software is available to all students as a free download.
