Recommended Sequence of Courses

 NOTE: To be eligible for any type of certification in education, students must meet the GPA requirement and meet the required scores for a test of basic skills in math, reading, and writing.

Teaching Art Major Pattern
First Year
It is recommended that Teaching Art Majors take 2 introductory-level studio courses and 1 of the required Art History courses in their first year. 
Education courses designated* for the first year are EDU 1004 Observing the Learner
PSY 1004 General Psychology, which is an allied course requirement also fulfills a GE distribution requirement.
EDU 2164 Designing Constructivist-Based Learning Climates may be taken in Winter Term of the first year if the student has met the prerequisite of EDU 1004.
When making course selections and designing a four-year plan, it is important to check the course offering history for all Education courses needed, and consult with a member of the Education faculty in addition to the advisor.
Following these recommendations, a student would have a minimum of 3 credits toward the major at the end of their first year.

Sophomore Year
Students should apply for admission to the Education program during their sophomore year.
In the second year, Teaching Art Majors should complete all required introductory-level studio courses and at least 1 of the required Art History courses.  It is recommended that declared majors work with a faculty advisor in the Art and Art History program to register for courses in the third and fourth years. 
Education courses designated* for the sophomore year include EDU 2014 Schooling in American Culture, EDU 2164 Designing Constructivist-Based Learning Climates, and EDU 2094 Standards-Based Instruction 
Following these recommendations, a student would have a minimum of 6 credits toward the major and 5 education credits at the end of their second year.

Junior Year
Teaching Art Majors should complete all required Art History courses by the end of the third year. Any remaining and required introductory-level studio courses must also be completed.  Students should take at least one Advanced Studio Practices (ART 4344) by the end of their third year.
Education courses designated* for the junior year include EDU 3054 Instructional Strategies, EDU 3074 Interactive Integrated Learning ClimatesEDU 3244 Practicum in Learning Experiences, and any 2000-level courses left to complete.
Following these recommendations, a student would have a minimum of 9 credits toward the major and 8 education credits at the end of their third year.  A more rapid progression is often recommended and would decrease the number of courses remaining for the final year.

Senior Year
Teaching Art Majors may elect to take EDU 4514 Senior Seminar  in place of ART 4302/ART 4402 Studio Art Senior.  ART 4302/4402 would otherwise conflict wit the Winter Term Student Teaching.
Education courses designated* for the senior year include EDU 4314 Supervised Teaching: Twelve Grades, EDU 4514 Senior Seminar (if deemed appropriate over ART 4444) and any 2000 or 3000-level courses left to complete.
Teaching Art Majors following the recommended sequence of courses will have up to 3 additional courses in the final year.  Although it is perfectly acceptable to take some of these additional studio courses earlier, the structure of this recommended sequence is designed to encourage students to complete their General Education requirements prior to the final year.  With this in mind, Teaching Art Majors should consult with Education faculty to best coordinate a full sequence of courses.
*NOTE: While this course progression of Education courses is recommended, aberrations in scheduling may result in a student's taking a course during a semester other than that which is recommended here.
