Academic Calendar 2011-2012

Transylvania uses a modified calendar called a "4-4-1 system." The academic year is divided into three parts: two regular terms (fall and winter) and a one-month term in May. An August term also is required for entering first-year students.

A regular term is 14 weeks long, and students normally take four courses.

During the four-week May term, students concentrate on one class and often get their first taste of international study. Many May term courses are team-taught and are highly interdisciplinary.

The three-week August term is an academic and cocurricular program that prepares entering first-year students for academic success and personal growth and earns them one course credit. Students read and discuss books and participate in student-life programs that orient them to college.

Students must complete August term their first year, and three May terms during their time at Transylvania. A fourth May term is optional.
