Exhibit Honors “Americans Who Tell the Truth”

Meet the artist
Robert Shetterly will be at Transylvania Monday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. in the William T. Young Campus Center for a presentation titled "The Doctrine of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, Truth, and Democracy." There will be a book-signing and an opportunity to meet the artist after the lecture.

In the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, artist Robert Shetterly found himself particularly discouraged by the pronouncements and the decision-making of many important U.S. leaders. As he tried to work through his sadness and disappointment, he shifted his thoughts instead to historic and contemporary Americans whose courageous acts or words inspired him.

To share his increasing optimism about America’s future, Shetterly began painting portraits of the individuals whose work moved him. His artwork also incorporated text, so the individuals were honored not just with their likenesses but with their words. Those initial portraits were the humble beginning of “Americans Who Tell the Truth.”

To date, Shetterly has completed nearly 200 portraits. They have traveled to schools and public venues for exhibits in 26 states.

Transylvania is fortunate to have eight of these portraits for an exhibit associated with our year-long celebration of 50 years of desegregation, Still Overcoming: Striving for Inclusiveness.

The exhibit in the William T. Young Campus Center runs from Sept. 16–Oct. 22. Hours are 9 a.m.–8 p.m.  Monday through Friday and 1–8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The exhibit is sponsored by Transylvania's Creative Intelligence Series.

On Oct. 21, Shetterly will be on campus to present "The Doctrine of Discovery, Manifest Destiny, Truth, and Democracy" at 7:30 p.m. in the Campus Center Gym. A reception with the artist will follow in the Campus Center Lounge. The public is invited.
